NAUJAAT, Nunavut –
Two investigators from the Nunavut Fire Marshal’s Office have arrived in Naujaat on Hudson Bay to analyze a fireplace that destroyed the hamlet’s community centre.
Video and images posted to social media present flames towering into the sky because the blaze — which RCMP say began late Friday night time — burned lengthy into Saturday morning.
RCMP Cpl. Sean French says the centre was destroyed.
No one was injured, French says, though he says one firefighter was briefly handled for smoke inhalation.
French says the hearth burned so intensely that some close by properties and the well being centre had been evacuated as a precaution, and at one level electrical energy was knocked out for about an hour early Saturday.
Naujaat, which was once referred to as Repulse Bay, has about 1,100 inhabitants.
